OpenMPT Instruments

A sample is made of a single sound playback, but an instrument is usually made of multiple sound playbacks assigned to different keys. This is called multisampling.

When you first create a new project, by default, you are set to use regular samples. But you can switch over to using instruments instead. To do this, go to the Instrument tab and click the Insert Instrument icon.

Once you have added an instrument to your project, you need to add samples to the instrument. So click on the Samples tab and add some samples to your project.

Back in the Instruments tab you will see an area labeled Sample Map. This is where you can assign the samples to each note. Now when you use your instrument to play a C note in the 4th octave, for example, the project knows which sample sound you intended to use.

You can also edit the Sample Map graphically using the icon that looks like a piano keyboard.
